THERMAL BARRIER COATINGS

We apply TBC (Thermal Barrier Coatings) for the protection of parts surfaces that are exposed to high heat, oxidation, flames and molten metals.

MBI's TBC coatings are produced by the use of our "high energy" plasma spray processes.  With such process, the temperature of the plasma spray stream carying the ceramic material reaches 18,000°F, enough to melt-soften the desired zirconia type ceramics that are most suitable for heat shielding.

TBC layers are usually duplex coatings consisting of a FeCrAl/Y  alloy bond coat layer topped by a ceramic coating such as Yitria, Zirconia or Alumina.  Specifically Yitria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is one of the most popular plasma sprayed heat-shield coatings.

Proven TBC applications include aerospace and jet engine components such as on turbine blades, combustion cans, etc. However, commercial industries also benefit from such coatings in the fields of metal processing, automotive, paper, plastic and rubber manufacturing.

Application examples:

  • Nozzles
  • Vanes
  • Skimmers
  • Troughs
  • Exhaust parts
  • Manifolds
  • Cams
  • Cells
  • Ingot molds
  • Scoops
  • Hot plates
  • Piston domes
  • And many more!
